KEYS
TO THE RULES OF GOLF
The Rules of
Golf are written in a very precise and deliberate fashion. All golfers
should be aware of and understand the following differences in word
use.
For
example:
May - optional
Should – recommendation
Shall or Must – instruction (penalty involved if not carried
out)
“a” ball – you may substitute another ball
“the” ball – you may not substitute another ball
In addition,
answering the following questions can help you determine the ruling
in any particular situation:
1. What is the form of play? (match or stroke play, single, foursome,
four ball, etc.)
2. Who is involved? (player, partner, either caddie, outside agency,
etc.)
3. Where is this occurring? (teeing ground, bunker or hazard, elsewhere)
4. What are the player’s intentions? (What was he doing? What
does he want to do?)
5. Are there any subsequent events? (returned card, competition
closed, etc.)
Some
advice...
Start with the Definitions section of the Rules of Golf. Master
the definitions and everything else will fall into place. As with
any subject, the key terms are teh most important aspect of the
Rules of Golf. Understanding the most complex situations is dependent
upon your knowledge of the basics.
